On 4/25/16 my family and I was returning from Orlando on flight 632 going home to Huntington, WV about 20 mins out from the airport the pilot came on the intercom and notified the passengers that there was a small fire in one of the engines and he had shut it down. The pilot didn't seem alarmed which eased the situation.

Then about 10 mins out he (the pilot) again notified the passengers that when we arrived to the airport that there would be emergency vehicles along the runway but not to be alarmed it was precautionary and again all was fine. On landing we hit the runway hard and it took almost the entire length of the runway for us to stop. After stopping the aircraft was inspected by the airport fire department and then after 10 more min. was told we were headed to the terminal.

After disembarking the plane we ran into a person that we knew that had knowledge of the incident. They had told us that what we were told was not the whole story. As we were told, the pilot was radioing for Mayday that the plane was in a precarious situation and this was 30 mins before landing. That there had been a fire in the engine and indeed he had shut it down, but the down side was they wasn't sure if they could land and was making preparations for a emergency landing or a crash landing.

We were told that the decision was made to land at Huntington hoping that all would go well, but there was doubt that it would. As you can see I'm writing this so all went well but this could have been prevented because the problem was caused by dry rotten oil lines. My wife and I remember hearing the flight attendant tell the pilot that there was something that the ground crew in Orlando had found that was dry then was wet (not knowing what they were talking about) I can only speculate it was the area around the oil lines.

I hope allegiant air lines take heed to this because if it wasn't for the grace of god and a great pilot I would not be writing this. Beware of Allegiant I use to chuckle at the bad press they get about maintenance issues but NEVER AGAIN

Reason of review: Bad quality.

Preferred solution: Full refund.

Allegiant Air Pros: Professionalism of the piolt and crew, Good ground staff.

Allegiant Air Cons: Near crash landing, No being notified from allegiant about the incident, Not being told of the danger my family and i was in.

Location: Herndon, Virginia

Although this can be a scary situation you were no where near a crash landing.planes can fly on one engine just fine and if there is a fire in the engine each engine has a fire extinguisher to put out the fire and they are designed in a matter where a engine fire will be contained.scary but no real danger.that's why flying is so safe.

I was on that flight. I will never fly with them again.

That must have been scary. The MD80 can fly with one engine stopped as your experience taught you.

Pilots always say "mayday" mayday" for certain problems. It does not mean that there is going to be a crash, but gives them priority and warns other airplanes in the area that they have a problem and may not be on the normal heading or altitude. Likewise they prepare for a crash landing, even if the possibility of it is not high because things can change. [Just like we react when we have a blowout, even though the chance of an accident is low.] Also, when were you not told of the "danger" you were in.

The pilot is not going to spend time telling all the possibilities to the passengers - he spends his time flying the plane. Finally, if the plane landed safely, the passengers knew a fire had occurred in one engine, what else is there to tell.

It may be months before the investigation shows what actually was the cause.

A great show to watch is "mayday, Mayday airplane crash investigation." A watching that, I realize how well made the planes are and how well trained the pilots are, and what an effort they make to do things right.
