Beware Allegiant Air

My Fiancé and I have had a horrific experience with Allegiant nearly from the get-go, and sadly this was to be our first time using their airline. We purchased round-trip flights for both of us to visit family for the holidays since the price was appealing and they were non-stop flights.

A little over seven days prior to our first departure flight we received an unfortunate call that my Fiancé’s Grandfather had passed away suddenly – and this news came exactly one week since her Father had passed away as well. After receiving this call we immediately called Allegiant to ask them to change/cancel our flight since we needed to get back to her hometown quicker to assist family and attend the funeral. The agent we spoke with had absolutely no empathy, let alone sympathy, to our situation and spoke very coldly and impersonal with us. After speaking with a “lead” and explaining to us the “policies”, he informed us that they could let us change to a sooner outgoing flight or cancel, but would charge us a $150 fee plus we would owe any difference in the actual flight cost if changing.

We explained to him that all these costs and fees would end up totaling more than the initial flight in the first place - not to mention cost more than simply buying a new flight with them or a different company from scratch. He basically said take it or leave it in rebuttal and then proceeded to say, and I quote: “It’s just a Grandparent. It’s not like it’s the death of a parent or a child. We don’t have a bereavement policy anyway, so we are offering you a deal that we shouldn’t be offering.” This is where I asked to speak with a manager and was rudely and quickly counteracted with a “..we don’t offer that here, customers cannot speak to leads and even if they could they would say the same thing..” comment.

I eventually gave up after going back and forth with this agent since we didn’t have a lot of time and needed a new flight fast. After hanging up I ended up purchasing a new flight with a competitor for $49 each – well beating the so-called deal he had offered to change our flight. I must say I have flown for over twenty years with many airlines and have never had such a terrible customer service experience. I understand polices are in place for a reason, but I also understand that there used to be thing called good customer service that existed in the world where exceptions were made for certain extenuating situations and also to promote customer morale.

After a second call to a different agent a few days later, which was still prior to the initial flight, we still did not receive any leeway with this company other than a $128 credit towards a future flight. The only reason we even got this was because the agent cancelled out return flight. In the end our whole original cost was $542 for the two round trip tickets and we only got a measly $128 returned to us in the form of credit for another flight. So $414 was essentially stolen from us due to shady and bogus policies and horrific customer service.

The worst part is the second agent said we could have got more credit returned but management put notes in the system to retract the original offer that the first agent gave. This is quite sad that customers are treated like this with Allegiant and from the multitude of reviews I see that it appears to be the consensus. I recall years ago I had to cancel a whole flight and vacation package with Southwest airlines that was purchased as non-refundable since a family member got sick. After speaking with an agent and manager we ended up getting the whole package refunded in full, and this was the actually money not a credit.

This was a package that cost over $2000 at the time too. You would think a company like Allegiant would at the very least offer our full money back in credit form, especially considering how much notice we gave – but instead we were made to feel like an enemy, not a customer… It’s just SAD.

I recommend buying a "Refundable ticket" or a "Flexible ticket" next time. It costs more but it will cover you.

Also, some travel insurance companies will also pay you the full amount back in cases like these, so also look into getting travel insurance next time.

Guest

Live so that you never fear the truth like this company does. You get what you pay for which is not very much with this Southwest wannabe.

Guest

What is really sad is that you enter into a contract and agree to certain terms, then don't have the integrity to accept that is what you agreed to. Instead you bad mouth Allegiant for simply following the contract.

So what you really want is to get the benefit and low price of a non-refundable ticket, but then because you are so so so special you want the benefits of a refundable ticket if something goes wrong.

We know you can't be so *** that you don't see that this involves acceptance of risks. You can place all the risks of intervening events on the airlines by buying a REFUNDABLE TICKET. Or you can take the risk (and substantially lower price) by buying a NON-REFUNDABLE TICKET and gamble you can make the trip and that nothing will intervene.

Be a man.

Face up to the fact that you chose the cheap ticket and lost. Don't be a cry baby, show some integrity.

Allegiant air flight time changes

I booked a flight for my son from Sanford Orlando to Allentown . My brother got him to the airport , when they went to check him in they were told the flight had already boarded and about to leave and he could not get on it . The flight departure was 0725, he was there since before 0600. I'm confused. Why would the time change and no one notified ?? There were other customers there as well that missed the flight as well. The worst then was unable to get anyone on the phone it was all automated. Very sad and disappointed

I am a reporter looking to do a story on Allegiant. Could you please email me at 10MntlExpo79@***.com Thank you!

A quick glance for flights from this airport to your airport from 3-29-16 to 4-11-16 show the morning ride left from times ranging from 7:21 A.M. to as late as 7:55 A.M.

What time did you all think the flight was leaving? I'm guessing if the flight leaves at the same time everyday but when you turn up someone didn't pay attention to what they were doing.

Guest

I'm confused, you say he was there at 0600 but what time did he check in at the counter?

Another point of confusion is if he was in there, checked in and in the right place how did he miss the boarding announcement?

Guest

The very same thing happened to my son with Alligient in Lexington KY. No refund or transfer of ticket.

This will never happen again with Alligient Airline .

hmm I seem to see a pattern here. Anonymous 2 replies on every post.

All condescending to the customer. Do they work for Allegiant? What happened to the idea of good customer service?

I guess as a customer no one is entitled to expect what they pay for anymore.

Bad exèerience on the Segment Indianapolis-New Orleans and return

On the segment Indianapolis-New Orleans (Flight 808 April 7 2016, MD-80 aircraft), we were two hours late because a metal strap for a door was not properly functioning. On the way back (flight 809 April 10 2016), we left the docking station 45 minutes late because the plane arrived late. While approaching the runway, the captain announced that two toilets were not working and that we had to go back to the gate for repairs. We stood in the heat of the plane for almost an hour before the captain told us that the malfunctioning of the toilets were not properly identified before leaving the docking station due to the malfunctioning of a improper diagnostic. After some time, we were invited to disembark with all our luggage and use the toilets on the ground. When we re-entered the aircraft more time went buy without circulating air (it was hot). To make the story short we arrived in Indy at 7pm instead of the scheduled time 3:30. The impression I got, and I was not the only one, is that you are using older planes and you are not keeping preventive maintenance. You wait for a mulfunction to happen before you fix it. Complaints of this king abound about Allegiant on the web.

We know two facts: The toilets worked when the plane flew into your airport or their would have been complaints. Airlines do not do preventative maintenance on the turn around of a flight.

So when the plane is ready to leave on your flight, the toilets don't work. Now who knows what passengers in the last flight tried to flush down the toilet that would freeze up the flushing equipment.

Has your toilet every backed up from too much toilet paper?

Did that mean you failed to do preventative maintenance on your toilet and were careless. Did that mean that your toilet was old and that you should have bought a new one.

Guest

A nonfunctional toilet at 30000 ft will produce ice which when it breaks off could be invested in the engine. This could result in catastrophic failure.

To put in simpler terms, your disemboweled body and that of your family will end up in the ocean or mountain tops soaked in jet fuel. Has nothing to do with type of aircraft or age.

Flying from Florida to Burlington vt and tried cancelling my flight and rescheduling it a week in advance. Allegiant had sent me a promo code for free trip flex and didn't honor it. Lost 430.00 on paying for the trips which was two passengers they refused a refund or a credit of only 24.00.. Worst rip off joke airline I've ever seen. Cured me from flying ever they should be shut down!

Allegiant Air Flight Review from Owasso, Oklahoma

Our whole cheer team was set to fly out today to head to Florida for the 1st annual D2 Summit. Last cheer comp of the season when 30 mins ago I get a text for Alleigant Air saying "Flight Canceled"!!

What!!! No time to book a new flight at a decent price. I could understand if it was delayed or there is bad weather. But they just flat out cancelled it 10 hours before we were to fly out!

Never again will I use this airline, I don't care how much it saves someone. The team is going to be so disappointed when they realize they are going to miss their compition!

I noticed that you get 20% off on a rent a car if you book your airfare and rent a car together. I compared prices with Hotwire, Expedia, and Alamo DIRECT. I noticed Allegiant was 10% cheaper (even though they said 20%) so I booked with them. When I returned the vehicle I was given a slip for $122. I asked the clerk and they said that is taxes. 2 weeks later I see on my credit card statement $122. Hotwire, Expedia, Alamo, and all other third parties INCLUDE the taxes. NOT ALLEGIANT! In the fine print it does say does not include taxes. THEY GOT ME! I have rented cars dozens of times and that has never happened to me. I learned my lesson and ALLEGIANT WINS THE BATTLE but loses the war because I will probably never fly them again. They charge for PRINTING A BOARDING PASS $5. Carry On, Baggage, and beverage charge. BEWARE!

They did not 'get you." You failed to read and acted on the assumption that the taxes were included. Don't blame them for your failures and lack of attention to details.

Not to be redundant, but this is my worst flight experience ever! Our original flight was scheduled to leave yesterday (3/20) at 7:17pm.

After an initial hour delay, being held on the plane for two hours and in the terminal for more than six hours, we were informed that our flight was cancelled. We received notification that the replacement flight would be 3:22 pm that day (3/21). We are at the airport now and are on a one hour delay (so far). This is our 3rd experience with Allegiant that has resulted in a cancelled flight due to mechanical issues.

Call me a slow learner, but I am done with Allegiant. I seriously question the safety of their fleet.

Allegiant doesn't read these so maybe you should call them. Also this website has a weird 50 word minimum for responding to you so I am just going to keep typing words until I hit the minimum and am able to post the comment.

Seriously though, call them instead. ok.

Their cancellation policy is a rip-off

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

We booked a flight to Florida on October 18, 2015 for January 17, 2016. My husband was diagnosed with a collapsed lung with a mass on January 6 or 7.

The specialist advised that we could not travel with a collapsed lung and 47% usage of the other. Our cancellation fees were more than the cost of the flight. Other family members have experienced the same issue. Our flight and car rental charges were $1003.00.

Allegiant gave us a VOUCHER for $635.00 which must be used within a year. They charged for baggage carry-on ($60.00) which obviously we didn't use as the date for travel has not arrived, and they refunded a big fat ZERO.

Other charges, which we did not use, were not credited. Hidden charges, it appears the laws do not apply to them.

Guess you didn't like my comment about Airline Passenger Fair Treatment Act since you deleted it.

Guest

No, it is you who want the laws of contract not to apply to you. When you and your husband bought those tickets, you agreed to the terms and conditions of the flight, including the cancellation policies.

That you don't have the integrity to stand by your agreement and pay without complaint, does not make the airlines wrong.

Likewise, none of these charges are hidden, they are in the contract you agreed to when you bought the tickets. On the baggage charge, you bought the right to bring on a carryon. The fact that you then decided not to by failing to show for the flight, does mean you did not have this right.

Say you want to buy a house and put up a $2,000.00 non-refundable retainer so the seller will hold the house for 30 days so you can see if you can get financing. If you buy the house, this retainer goes toward the purchase price.

If you can't get financing and cannot buy the house, the fact that the seller retains the non-refundable deposit does not mean you did not get exactly what you paid the $2,000.00 for: the right to keep the seller from selling for 30 days. That you did not exercise your right to buy during that period, does not change the fact you had that right.

I'm not going to get in any contest with you. It just shows what lack of compassion Allegiant has.

It's all about the $$$.

Where are the charges listed? Integrity?????

Guest

Dude! What's your problem.

Are you an attorney for Allegiant? Probably, that's why you sign on as "anonymous." I had the same issue! The whole point is not the legal part of the contract or policy! Most consumers expect some sort of understanding when using a product and service.

Standard level of service. Nowhere did I see a non-bereavement or non-medical policy, which most upstanding companies have. It's about human compassion. If they cared about the customer they would make these cancellation policies in big bold print as they do their false fares they advertise.

Most consumers who have to use this useless, poor excuse of a business, are not experienced or knowledgable enough to know that there is no common sense when making policies. All I can say is that what you put out there you receive, ten fold. That may be the reason this delapidated airline is suffering!

The "All-giant" airline will suffer collapse soon! I just wish there was a bigger spotlight on their evil practices!

When we flew Allegiant for the first time, it was a decent experience. However, i wanted to get some info from them before my flight so i tried calling customer service. Little did i know that would be the biggest mistake of my life. It takes 1 hr for them to pick up and when they did they still weren't able to answer my question. Also after our flight we were delayed in baggage claim for over an hour waiting for our bags.

This has been my worst experience with an airline. For starters, the AC wasn't working on my flight from TPA to RDU.

But that was just the beginning. My return flight from RDU to TPA was first delayed two hours (not too far out of the ordinary..I could deal with this). I got to the airport two hours before my flight as I normally do, waited patiently, only to be told 10 minutes before boarding time that the flight was now CANCELLED due to crew hours......... Is this not something that can be determined in advance...I don't know, maybe when the flight was originally delayed two hours.

I am livid. Not to mention that I will be losing money tomorrow when I SHOULD be at work. I can understand mechanical issues and weather concerns but, really.... Somewhere down the line, someone dropped the ball.

Big time. I will not be flying allegiant again.

Ever.

Timing Out

USA Today

New rules that require pilots to get a minimum amount of uninterrupted rest and limit the number of consecutive hours they can fly will go into effect on Saturday.

Airlines, which have had two years to prepare for the changes, say they are bracing for potential delays and cancellations, especially on days like today when bad weather is already mucking up flight schedules, the Wall Street Journal reports. If crews time out and relief pilots have to step in, that could cause disruptions, they say.

"Everything we know about planning for and operating in winter storms, de-ice events, spring thunderstorms, summer rolling [air-traffic control delay] programs and hurricane season will change on some level," Marisa Von Wieding, vice president of systems operations control for JetBlue Airways, wrote in a memo to pilots this week, according to the Journal.

Guest

Weather and mechanical delays are some of the reasons pilots time out..it happens with every airline.Thats why it always good to plan an extra day just in case.
